Ramalon the Sumatran Tiger Oil Painting Demonstration
While I was visiting the Melbourne Zoo and I took a few photos of Ramalon, the Sumatran tiger in his enclosure.
I decided to place him in a small water hole for my oil painting.
1. Begin by preparing your canvas. Make sure it is properly primed and ready for painting.
2. Using a pencil, lightly sketch the outline of the Sumatran Tiger. Try to make the drawing as accurate as possible.
3. Choose the appropriate paints for the project. Mix together a variety of grayscale hues to create a unique and eye catching painting.
4. Begin painting the tiger using the darker shades of gray. Start with the outlines of the tiger and then move inward, filling in the details.
5. Once the outlines are painted, begin to add layers of color to the painting. Use a variety of lighter shades to create highlights and shadows.
6. Finish the painting by adding details such as whiskers and stripes.
7. Allow the painting to dry completely before displaying it. Creating a grisaille painting of a Sumatran Tiger is a rewarding experience that can be enjoyed by any artist. With patience and a steady hand, anyone can create a beautiful piece of art.
The first step I do is a full grayscale black and white painting.
I mix my own darks usingย a mixture of ultramarine blue. and burnt umber.
For the whites I use either Titanium white or flake white, depending what I have on my palette (My preference is Flake White, as its more Opaque and better suited for under painting)

Sumatran Tiger First layer of oil paint
Small update to the Tiger painting.
The first colour glaze has been applied to the tiers body, I still has a long way to go, before I call it finished.
The layering of transparent colours can take a long time, the secret is to not overload the area you are applying pigment, if you do, it will lose the 3D feel to the painted surface.
Sumatran Tiger a bit further along
Added the next several layers of indian yellow and ultramarine blue paint to the water and reinstated the dark tiger stripes on the Tiger.
The next step isย toย add more detail. Eyes whiskers etc.
